Reflection: We all know the difficulty of eating healthily. Even when we try hard to follow the very best advice it’s difficult to be self-controlled. And even harder when the best advice seems to change! In the past butter was the ‘baddy’ and low-fat products were the way to go. Now butter is better and low-fat yoghurts and other products are despised for their high sugar content.
Many of us will have experienced being in rough surf and being tossed and tumbled about, or perhaps being in a boat having the same experience. We’ll also have seen leaves being tumbled and thrown about by the wind. Paul uses these two images of Christians who are immature. They are thrown about by new teachings and crafty scheming just as we might be confused and thrown off course by ever changing dietary information.
In what ways are you, or other Christians or churches that you know, vulnerable to ‘every wind of teaching’ or to ‘the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming’?
Prayer: Heavenly Father, please help me not to be an infant in Christ, tossed about by novel teaching and crafty scheming. Amen.
