Series Introduction: It can be easy to get bogged down in life. In the busyness of everyday life. In the details and the routines. It can be easy to forget the big picture of who we are in Christ, and of how God calls us to live as his people. In Ephesians 1-3, Paul paints an amazing picture of what God has done for us in Christ. He follows this with a beautiful portrait of how we can live in a manner worthy of our calling. We’ll spend the next two weeks exploring together how that looks.
Reflection: I’m writing in the week after the Federal election. Mr Albanese has flown to Tokyo for his first international engagement as Prime Minister and the media is assessing whether he is performing this initial task in a manner worthy of the role.
In the first three chapters of Ephesians, Paul has been unfolding the big picture of God’s plan of salvation for the whole world. This picture is one of redemption through the blood of Christ, the forgiveness of sins. It’s a picture of being made alive in Christ even while we were dead in transgressions. Of having been far away from God, but now brought near by the blood of Christ.
It’s a magnificent picture of God’s generosity towards us in Christ.
And after painting this picture, Paul now goes on in chapter 4 to urge us to live a life worthy of the calling, we have received in Christ. Over the next two weeks, as we spend time in Ephesians 4, we’ll have the opportunity to reflect on whether we are living in a manner worthy of the calling we have received in Christ.
What part of God’s generosity towards us in Christ are you particularly thankful for today?
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you for salvation in Christ. Help me to live a life worthy of the calling I have received. Amen.
