Reflection: One of the interesting claims of post-modernism is that truth is relative. Something is true if it’s ‘true for you’. There are obviously many different categories of truth in our lives: scientific truth is different to relational truth. Historical and religious truth are different still.
The item of clothing that Paul calls us to put off in this verse is falsehood. It’s to be replaced by the mantle of truth, and the reason for truth telling is that ‘we are all members of one body’. Failing to speak the truth to another member of the body of Christ is a bit like stabbing one’s own body. As members of the body of Christ, we can only grow in unity together if we trust each other. And trust is built on truth.
Perhaps you have experienced the damage that falsehood can do in the body of Christ. Or perhaps, more positively, the power of truth.
When are you tempted not to speak truthfully to your neighbour?
Prayer:Â Heavenly Father, forgive us when we speak falsehood. Give us pure tongues and help us to speak truthfully to each other. Amen.
