Reflection:
‘He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake.’ Psalm 23:3b, (NIV)
Your spirit navigates me on life-paths that befit your worthy praise. (author’s paraphrase)
Have you ever run away? I mean literally run and hid? One of our kids, angry and stubborn, did just that. She ignored our desperate voices calling as it fell dark and cold…until we found her. As I scrunched her in my lap, I didn’t know whether to be angry or elated.
Come to think of it, that run-away response is totally true to our fallen nature since hiding behind the trees in Eden. But our good shepherd has done a new thing. He not only calls us, but, having given us his Spirit, inclines our hearts to recognize, follow and treasure him. Profound! This new sheepish nature.
I repeat a more ‘grown up’ prayer for my kids based on this staggering truth. May they hear and follow you in paths of righteousness. And may they live not for themselves, but to nobly impact your reputation. That’s the potential of our steps today!
Prayer: We see…and may the whole world see you doing a new thing, Good Shepherd …. making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland … giving drink to your people, your chosen, the people you’ve formed for yourself…that we may proclaim your praise. (Isaiah 43:19, 21)
