Reflection: Double negatives rub me up the wrong way. But this one’s here for a reason. David begins with an emphatic: God so tends me that I have need of not one thing more. Wait. Really?! How can he make an outrageous claim like that?
If, since yesterday, you still have a foot in Eden, picture David, like Adam, in the garden. Hand-picked, each man is named and claimed by God. God, who already knew their wayward choices, calls, “Adam!” “David!”. They helpless-know that voice. It’s the voice of their shepherd. Are they needy? You bet! Like sheepish sheep they’re notoriously needy. But the shepherd knows their needs and meets their needs. That’s the truth that David here confidently claims.
Unlike the apostle Paul in his letter to the Philippians (4:19), David couldn’t cradle his outrageous confidence in the cross and resurrection. And my God will supply all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus. But we can!
(Do you see a second double negative – another emphatic note – in today’s reflection?)
Prayer: Lord Jesus, you have gathered me up and carry me close – so comfort-close as to have become a lamb. Oh Lamb of God, that life be reclaimed you surrendered yours, and in so doing sated every need; satiated my every need. (Pray that again…slowly.)
