Reflection: ‘I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me – just as the Father knows me and I know the Father – and I lay down my life for the sheep.’ John 10:14-15
Did your grandmother, like mine, stuff things into her bosom for handy safekeeping – a hanky, some bills ? But to hold someone in your bosom, that expresses exceptional intimacy and care. He will feed his flock like a shepherd. He will carry the lambs in his arms, holding them close to his heart. He will gently lead the mother sheep with their young.* This was an intimacy that David the shepherd practiced. This was an intimacy in which David the sheep took comfort.
We, just as sheepish and stray as David, know our shepherd to tenderly and vigilantly care for us. Offering not just protection, but himself, he ably, justly and lovingly rules his world.
Since our kids were born and till today, we pray a simple yet profound prayer with/for them: Jesus tender shepherd, keep your little lambs until the night is through.
Could you establish a tradition of confidently entrusting yourself and your family ‘into the bosom of the Father’?
*Isaiah 40:11
Prayer: What more comforting place to be than in your bosom, Jesus, tender shepherd! Come what may, I rest reassured in that safety and confidence.
