Reflection: …And my forever-home will be with you. (author’s paraphrase of Psalm 23:6b)
We’ve reflected on the epic span of human history. Pause and let your imagination create a mental picture of each of these:
the Creator-shepherd with his creatures in the garden temple;
generations of runaway sheep defined by sin, in need of a shepherd;
the Christ-shepherd’s vindicating life, death and resurrection;
and the Spirit-shepherd ‘templing’ in each of his flock.
I will feed My flock and I will cause them to lie down… I will seek that which was lost, and bring again that which was driven away, and will bind that which was broken, and will strengthen that which was sick… (We love the sound of all that, don’t we. But that’s not where the prophet Ezekiel finished…and that’s not the end of the Shepherd’s story either.) …but I will destroy the fat and the strong, I will feed them with judgment. *
While all of creation strains expectantly to share God’s glory we also await God’s severe mercy – his judgement.
*Ezekiel 34:15-16
Prayer: Sovereign and merciful Lord, I trust your goodness and justice now and forever. Sooth our groaning spirits, while we continue the wait for our complete bodily freedom as your children. Spirit, uplift me when I’m faint and frail and keep me persisting in hope.
