Jesus the Real Vine
1“I am the real vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2He breaks off every branch in me that does not bear fruit, and he prunes every branch that does bear fruit, so that it will be clean and bear more fruit. 3You have been made clean already by the teaching I have given you. 4Remain united to me, and I will remain united to you. A branch cannot bear fruit by itself; it can do so only if it remains in the vine. In the same way you cannot bear fruit unless you remain in me.
Reflection: Somehow, my husband and I have become gardeners. Awhile back, my husband was pruning the macadamia nut tree in our backyard. This tree had begun to take up a significant part of our back yard and needed to be cut back. It wasn’t an easy job: the leaves on that tree are sharp and resistant. He carried on, despite the pain and the end result was fantastic. I am aware of my sinfulness on a daily basis and the areas of my life that need to be cut out. Yet I am not always open to a good old prune from God. His words are sharp and I resist His pruning. Though painful at the time, I need
to let His gospel prune and purify me.
Question: When God begins to prune you, are you able to surrender to it?
Prayer: Lord, it never feels good to be “schooled”, but it is so important that we remain teachable. Show us the areas of our lives that we need to be working on. Amen.
