Reflection: This verse is a favourite in the Pekan household. It shapes our values, our decisions and our faith. It moved us to expand the boundaries of our home and become foster parents. We’ve welcomed over 40 kids into our home in the past eight years. My role as a father includes my four biological kids and dozens of other little babes who have been under our roof. It’s a hard gig. Many children have had a rough start. We play a small part in their lives (sometimes only hours, other times years). But these kids have been undergirded by prayer and shown as much love as we
can give, through the love of God the Father flowing through us. This may not be your calling, but God’s fatherhood extends beyond his Son to all of us adopted into the Kingdom of God. James’ command to us is strong and you may have a role to play as a “father-figure” in a child’s life.
Question: Is there someone in your life to whom you can open your heart, give of your time or maybe even open your home to (even if it’s just one mealtime)?
Prayer: Lord, thank you for the blessings you’ve given me in my life. Thank you for those who have played the role as father or father-figure in my life. I pray for eyes to see someone who I can open my heart and home to in
coming days.
We’re reading the Bible until September 8th with Rick Pekan. Rick is Bible Society Australia’s church and community relations coordinator in WA. With his wife Louise, Rick has been a foster carer for 40 children as well as having four children of their own.
