Reflection: In this passage, James unpacks an important Christian concept: that faith without deeds is useless. He goes on to say that his faith was made complete by what he did. If you have ever spent time around children you will know that they have a knack to pay more attention to our actions than to our words. In our other relationships it is said that people will remember less about what you said and more about how you made them feel. I find many people today appreciate authenticity and practical compassion. Children are no different.
As fathers and as friends we would do well to follow James’ challenge to show our faith by our deeds. Our Christian witness will benefit, and our relationships will thrive.
Questions: Is there something I can do today to live out my faith through a good deed to someone else in my life?
Prayer: Lord, thank you for your work of salvation through faith in Jesus. We pray that we will live out our faith not just through belief, but through action and good deeds.
