Reflection: Mary asked the angel, “How can this be? I’m a virgin.” (Luke 1:34)
We read in the Bible the story of two individuals who were both visited by an angel, were told of a miraculous birth, and who both asked the same question. However, one was favoured, and one was silenced for months. Why?
The key difference between the two was noted in verse 20 when the angel said that Zechariah did not ‘believe’ his words. The way we ask questions reveals the nature of our hearts. While Mary was trying to genuinely understand what was going on, Zechariah already had decided he was right, and the angel was confused.
When you ask questions, are you seeking to understand? Or are you seeking to point out flaws in their logic?
When you ask God about new, uncomfortable, or challenging situations in your life, are you trying to genuinely leave room for him to reveal something new to you, or are you trying instead to throw spears using your questions?
Questions can open opportunities for deeper understanding, or they can sever the delicate fabric of relationships; it all depends on your intention.
How can you change the way you ask questions today? Could you perhaps pause, breathe and accept that maybe you don’t have all the answers before you ask?
Prayer: Lord, help me to ask the right questions in the right way. Help me to truly seek to understand instead of using my questions as a means to accuse. When I ask you questions, Lord, help me to give you space to answer in your way and in your time.
