Why Your Words Matter

Day 2 of 14

NIV

Psalms 33:6-9

'By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth... For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm. ' Psalms 33:6,9, NIV

Reflection:  So why are words so powerful? Well, the Bible says that when God created the heavens and earth, he ‘spoke’ it into being. Man was created when God breathed words of life into us.

Right now, in heaven the angels cry out ‘Holy, Holy, Holy’ (Revelation 4:8-11). From eternity-to-eternity, words are present in God’s way of moving, and since we are made in the image of God, words are a core need and basic expression of who we are.

We hunger and desire to hear words of love and validation – they fill us up. Words are also how we make ourselves known and understood to others. If you’ve ever been given the silent treatment or felt like you are in a void of no communication, it feels suffocating and scary; that’s because we’ve been deprived of a basic need. Words anchor us, they give meaning to our experiences, and are vital for survival – especially the words of God (Matthew 4:4).

So, before we dive into how we can use words, we must first understand the powerful nature of the words we speak. How they can bring life or death. How once spoken they cannot be taken back.

Words aren’t just powerful, they are sacred.

Prayer:  Lord thank you that you have given me pages of Scripture that affirm and validate who I am in you. Help me to fill myself and others up with words that bring life and nourishment. Amen.
