Reflection: Congenial conversation—what a pleasure! The right word at the right time—beautiful! Proverbs 15:23, The Message
The right word at the right time is like a custom-made piece of jewelry, and a wise friend’s timely reprimand is like a gold ring slipped on your finger. Proverbs 25:11-12, The Message
On the last day of this devotional series, I want to touch on something that can make or break even the most potent set of words. Timing.
Before my fiancé proposed to me, I had to go through a long season of healing and learning to trust again. Although I wanted to marry him one day, I am so glad he waited until I was ready before he asked me the question (or that could have been super awkward!). On that day, I felt like I could fully appreciate the words he spoke, I could fully grasp the scope of the question and I was whole-heartedly able to respond with a squealing “yes”!
Armed with your toolkit of words, and wisdom on how to use them, don’t forget that we need to pray for God to bring about the right timing for the right words. Prematurely saying things or waiting until it’s too late can cause your words to lose impact. That’s why we need to lean on God and ask him for his help every day as we speak.
Prayer: Jesus, you know where people’s hearts are at, and you know the right time, manner, and words to speak in every situation. Help me to always check in with you, especially if my words will impact the lives of others. Thank you that you are always there to help me. Amen.
