Reflection by Jo Koepke*
The idea of receiving a gift is simple – you take the gift being offered, say thanks, open it and use/enjoy it. Or at least it is supposed to be. I have been guilty of making it far more complicated in my mind. Debating if I should be taking it, worrying about needing to reciprocate with like value, and so on. These verses highlight a gift on offer with a simple process to receive it. We believe in, have faith in and rely on Jesus. His name represents who he is and the authority he has to forgive our mistakes and restore our relationship with God.
The entirety of the gift is available to us through that simple process of believing. Not only are we forgiven but we are also adopted into the new family of Jesus, becoming a child of God. I don’t know the circumstances of your birth or what family has meant in your life. We all come from different life experiences. And yet, we become part of this new family together. It is filled with imperfect people, just like me, being transformed by Jesus and learning how to love well.
Adult life comes with many demands and challenges. There are days I wish I could go back to being a child. In a way, this is what God offers. I get the privilege of resting with Daddy God, coming to him with child-like faith. The demands and challenges continue, but I can rely on his strength and guidance as the ‘adult’ in charge. What a gift!
Prayer
Jesus, I believe in you and thank you for this gift. I am a child of God. Help me learn how to love well in this new family you have invited me into. Amen.
