Reflection by Mike Raiter*
Human eyes can’t see God, but our ears and our minds can hear him speak and know he is there. God has always spoken of his power through the beauty, complexity and wonder of creation. In the Scriptures through prophets and poets God spoke to his people and revealed his character and plans for the world. Still, they didn’t see him. He remained hidden by an impenetrable divine cloud.
Then the most incredible, almost unthinkable thing happened. The invisible became visible. God appeared. God, the Director, came from behind the curtain and walked onto the stage. The one God is three persons: Father, Son, and Spirit. Now God the Son became a human being. Late in his life John would say, “we have seen with our eyes…our hands have touched…the Word of Life” (1 John 1:1). When Jesus came, people ate with God. They walked and talked with God. They smiled, laughed, cried, and celebrated with God.
Jesus does two things for us that no-one else can do. He speaks truthfully about God. All we need to know about God, life, the future, salvation, God in Jesus has told us. Secondly, Jesus brings us into a personal relationship with God. We can’t experience him physically like the people he walked amongst, but by his Spirit, Jesus today is introducing us to God. By his death for us he opened the way so we can be God’s children and servants. We don’t just know about God, we know God.
According to surveys, the most popular Christmas song is ‘O Holy Night’. It reminds us of the angels’ voices rejoicing on “the night of our dear Saviour’s birth”. Today as we marvel that the unseen God came to us, let’s respond in the words of this song and “Fall on your knees”.
Prayer
We praise and thank you, Father, that you made yourself known to us in Jesus. In your mercy and kindness please continue to reveal yourself to many more people so they can be saved and worship you forever. We ask this for the sake of your glory. Amen.
