Reflection by Eva Muilenburg*
It’s easy to elevate ourselves when it is the world who decides what has merit and what doesn’t. However, as believers of Christ, we are called to something more than the elevation of self. In this verse, John is discussing the witness of John the Baptist about Jesus.
Both in physical age and ministry on Earth, John the Baptist was chronologically ahead of Jesus. John had acquired credibility through his ministry and more so when the genesis of Jesus’s public ministry on Earth was propelled via his ministry.
Despite this, he testifies that Jesus has surpassed him, attesting to his pre-existence. John is bearing witness to the truth that Jesus is the Word become flesh, which means that Jesus was always in existence. He wanted to make it abundantly clear that Jesus takes precedence over his own ministry, because the primary purpose of his mission was to point to the Messiah who has come. His life’s work was to prepare the way for the coming Messiah. He repeatedly (Jn 1: 15, 27 & 30) points to Jesus as the one who has always been in existence and therefore nothing can surpass the authority of the Word made flesh.
John’s passionate exclamation of the surpassing nature of Jesus is to highlight that no matter how impressive (or different) John’s own work may have seemed to others, the purpose of the ministry was not to elevate his own entity. John’s deep conviction and desire were to ensure that we understand that Jesus is the transcendent God who is the Eternal Word, and his pre-existence bears witness to his glory that surpasses all things.
Prayer
Dear Lord Jesus, we thank you that you are an eternal and transcendent God. Help us bear witness to your word boldly like John the Baptist who led from a place of humility and did not cling to earthly merit but faithfully pointed to you. Allow us, in our spaces of influence to live in a way that points to you, Lord. Amen.
