Reflection by Bill Salier*
As we read these verses today, we may feel we have to metaphorically take off our shoes as we tread on holy ground. John 3:16 is one of the most well-known and loved verses in the Bible. And rightly so. We are told four great things: God’s great motive, God’s great action, our great response, and the great consequence of this.
God’s great motive is love. The verse speaks of God’s love for the world, a world previously described as dwelling in darkness and ignorance; a world that has rejected God and is sinful. John emphasises the magnitude of God’s love for this unlovely world.
This love prompts the great action of sending his Son. The Son is sent to reveal God; to make him known as Father. Ultimately this leads to the Son willingly giving his life upon the cross for us and our salvation.
This gift is to be met by the great action of faith. This is not an action that merits anything, but it is a great action nonetheless: a placing of our trust in the Son, our lives in his hands.
And it leads to the great consequence of enjoying eternal life: long life, and the best kind of life, life with the Father, Son, and Spirit forever.
John goes on to point out in verse 17 that God’s intentions are good: that this action was aiming for our salvation. The giving of the Son is a rescue mission.
Today, let’s wonder at God’s love. Let’s be amazed that while we were still sinners Christ died for us. Let’s give thanks and pray that we might grasp just how much we are loved by our Father. Let’s pray that love might be expressed in our own lives to those around us.
Prayer
Loving Father, please help me to grasp the length, width, height, and depth of the love you have shown us, in the sending of your Son to offer us life. By the power of your Spirit, please fill me with your love and help me to grow in my ability to love others. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
