Reflection by Dave Edgar*
It’s beautiful how the book of John starts in the exact same way as the book of Genesis. It’s widely accepted that this is not by accident. The tone of these three words ‘in the beginning’ should bring the reader back to a place of reflection regarding what is first. Before anything was created; before anything existed; God did. The Hebrew readers would have identified immediately what the writer was doing when he referenced the beginning of Genesis and in turn would read this in way that emphasises that he (Jesus) is before all things.
As we approach December 25th and all the joyful moments of food, festivities and everything else connected to this season, might we take a moment today and reflect on the ‘beginning’. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning”. Before the business of family, there God is; before the rush of buying gifts, there God is; before the list of food to cook; there God is. Take a moment to think about God’s goodness in this season and resist the all-consuming creep-in of holiday busyness that distracts us from the real reason we celebrate Christmas. Christ was born. This moment truly was when we saw the Word become flesh, which was the fulfilment of a plan God had formed at the very beginning.
Prayer
God, today we turn our eyes to you, and we thank you for your master plan to save mankind. We praise you for this and for sending your son Jesus. We ask today that you would help us to shut out distractions in this season and that we would continually remember your goodness which has been there since the beginning. In your name, Amen.
