Reflection by Paul Dudley*
We are all witnesses. Witnesses to the things going on around us. From the ordinary comings and goings of life; the sights, sounds and smells of our favourite café or walking under the beautiful Jacaranda trees in full bloom in Sydney as I write. But there are times when we are witnesses to the extraordinary. When our accounts of these events help others to believe and be impacted by the wonderous or horrifying nature of these events. So much of our witnessing is now captured on our phones and uploaded on social media platforms… from the poached eggs on smashed avo, to the fight outside the night club.
John was sent by God to be a witness to the extraordinary, the marvellous, the unimaginable… Jesus. The life-giving creative Word (1:4), the illuminating, darkness-conquering force (1:5), the one who came into our world and dwelt among us (1:14). John would be the first, though not the weightiest, among a whole series of witnesses to this divine son of God who would walk among us, including Jesus himself and his works, Scriptures, the Father, the Spirit and the disciples. He is the true light that fulfils all the Old Testament hopes and expectations and enlightens every person in troubling times.
What are you witness to this Christmas? What are the sights, sounds and smells that will light up your posts? Will you testify to the one who has come into the world, who has given you light in dark times?
Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for Jesus, the light of the world who came among us that we might see and know you personally. Help us to see this more clearly this Christmas and like John, bear witness to your goodness. In his name we pray, Amen.
