Reflection by Jo Koepke*
Our experience of time and place in history may be different, but Jesus understands what it is like to be human. In this Christmas season, we remember that he came as a helpless baby. He was dependent on others. He had to learn how to walk and talk with all the frustrations that come from learning new skills. He went about ordinary daily life for 30 years before he began his ministry.
“The Word became flesh” with bones, muscles and skin. He felt the sun on his face and the wind in his hair. He felt hungry and thirsty. Tiredness, an aching body, and the blessing of sleep were all experienced by him. I find it so encouraging to know that Jesus was fully human and knows the daily struggles I face.
If he was only fully human though, it wouldn’t have the same power. Jesus was fully human and fully God. He brought the glory of God with him as the only Son. This glory was seen in the miracles he performed and the way that he loved people while here in human form. It was seen in the way he surrendered to the cross and was resurrected. He carried authority and power.
Everything that he did here on earth was full of grace and truth. He showed grace – unmerited favour, love and empowerment. He spoke truth when it was needed, while also knowing when he needed to remain silent. This is the nature of God embodied in Jesus. Fully human and fully God.
Prayer
Thank you, Jesus, that you know what it is like to live in this human body. Thank you for bringing grace and truth into our lives. May we learn to live and love as you did.
