Life Is Useless
8Don't be surprised when you see that the government oppresses the poor and denies them justice and their rights. Every official is protected by someone higher, and both are protected by still higher officials.
9Even a king depends on the harvest.
10If you love money, you will never be satisfied; if you long to be rich, you will never get all you want. It is useless.
Reflection: Tainted love Corrupt governments, oppressed minorities and public figures lining their own pockets. As it says elsewhere in Ecclesiastes, there is nothing new under the sun. While these things are not surprising, they are nevertheless not to be overlooked or accepted. They are a sign of deep-rooted evil and therefore distorted love. Genuine love leads to satisfaction and contentment, whereas distorted love never does. And this generates futility, meaninglessness. It is a corruption of true love.
Question: Check in honestly with yourself: how much of a lover of money are you?
Prayer:  Righteous Lord, change our hearts so that we love properly and experience spiritual contentment. Deliver us from the temptations to corruption that we face every day. Amen.
