Reflection: Worshipping sleep The Bible is not anti-sleep; it’s not anti-pleasure; it’s not anti-fun. Proverbs such as today’s can be misunderstood and misused to generate a joyless and workaholic Christian community. The key to avoiding this mistake is to notice the word “love”. We worship the things we love, and if we love sleep that is going to cause problems. Sleep here becomes a metaphor for laziness, lack of forethought, neglecting your duties or being a parasite on the labours of others. If
that’s you, you are worshipping yourself and forgetting you are part of a wider community with shared needs and resources. Take that seriously, and you will sleep more easily anyway.
Question: Are you a ‘sleep’ worshipper, and do you need to refocus your worship?
Prayer: Loving Father, show me where I am lazy and leaning unfairly on others and give me the courage and love to change. Amen
