Reflection: When angels sang to a bunch of shepherds, ‘peace on earth,’ the peace they sang of had nothing to do with the ending of wars – at least, not directly. It was all about God instituting his “peace plan” for humankind. His solution to our sin dilemma was for him to come as Jesus, to live the messiness of our life, and to die on a cross to pay the price for our sins so that we would no longer be cut off from him.
God wants his people back. He wants there to be peace between himself and us.
And so the angels sang to a bunch of low class, irreligious, shepherds. “Come and meet Jesus, the one who will change everything; the one who will make it possible for you to have peace with God. Come and meet Jesus, the one who demonstrates, peerlessly and irrevocably that God is for you, not against you.”
Prayer: Dear Jesus, when I didn’t know who I was…you gave me understanding. When I felt unloved – you showed me your love by dying in my place. When I had no destiny…you invited me to your home. I am so grateful for the peace you have given.
