Reflection: When you become a Christian, you no longer swim with the flow. You swim against it (Matthew 7:13-14). Jesus knew this. He therefore warns us that all the bile and vitriol of hell will be thrown at Christians. If you challenge evil, or shine a light on deceit and untruth, you will be attacked. As such, Christians will not know peace. The brutal reality is: we are ‘foreigners and strangers on earth’ (Hebrews 11:13).
But even in the midst of this, Christians can know a peace that transcends their circumstances. They can have peace that comes from sitting in God’s presence, and knowing him to be with them. This peace comes when all the accusations hurled against them, all their grief and failures, are expunged by the sacrifice of Jesus. It is a peace that comes from viewing our current history from the perspective of God’s ultimate victory.
This is a peace that the world can’t give… but it very much is a peace that Jesus does give (John 14:27).
Prayer: Dear Lord Jesus, the forces arrayed against your church are almost overwhelming. I feel some of them arrayed against me. Please give me your wisdom and courage to stay true to you.
