Reflection: Further reading: John 16:1-11
“But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment…” John 16:7-8, NIV
Once again Jesus returns to the work of the Comforter.
After he has left, Jesus will send the Holy Spirit to continue to present an on-going witness to Jesus in the world. Witness to Jesus continues through the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit conducts Christ’s case for him before the world.
Just as the Comforter keeps testifying to Christ, so must Jesus’ disciples. They had been with Jesus and heard his testimony and seen his deeds. In the same way, all Christians have a testimony to give. ‘Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect’ (1 Peter 3:15).
The great thing is that our witness, as timid and weak as it may seem, is joined by the witness of the Holy Spirit. He alone can really work in people’s hearts and minds to help them see Jesus. The Spirit of truth testifies through us about Jesus and works through our witness. As we speak, the Spirit speaks.
Prayer:
Give thanks for the blessing of the Holy Spirit in your heart and mind, and the promise that the Spirit is with you in your day-to-day witness to Christ. Pray for opportunities and courage to speak of the hope that you have in Jesus.
