Reflection:
‘If you love me…’ (verse 15) is the statement that lies behind these six verses.
Jesus has already demonstrated his love in the washing of his disciples’ feet and commanded the disciples to love one another (13:34-35). Now he talks of their love for him. This is natural enough, because any genuine love will usually be reciprocated; it is mutual and expressed in actions. Here, it flows into Jesus’ statement ‘…you will obey what I command’ (verse 15). To love Jesus is to obey Jesus.
Jesus then promises to ask the Father to give another Counsellor to be with his followers forever. The Counsellor is the Spirit of truth. This Counsellor (as translated in the New International Version) is the ‘paraclete’, the ‘one who comes alongside’. Jesus is promising that when he has gone back to heaven, another one will come in his stead. The Counsellor will act on Jesus’ behalf and communicate truth to them. Unlike Jesus – who was physically present – this Counsellor will be unseen. We know him because ‘he lives with you and will be in you’ (verse 17). Jesus assures us that his leaving ushers in an even greater blessing. We’re not abandoned as orphans, but he comes to us personally.
What amazing words of reassurance from Jesus! If we love Jesus, then he sends his Holy Spirit to enter our hearts and lives and to teach us. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Jesus. The Holy Spirit is Jesus living and dwelling in us personally. Through the Holy Spirit, we are intimately connected with the triune God of Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Prayer:
Give thanks for the Holy Spirit being present in your heart and life, the Spirit of Jesus guiding, strengthening, and speaking to you. Pray for the Spirit’s love and power to live for Jesus today.
