Reflection:
“If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.” John 15:6-8, NIV
Jesus’ metaphor of the vine points to himself as the true vine and his Father as the gardener. The Father plants the vine and then tends it and cares for it. The goal is a fruitful vine. He therefore ‘cuts off every branch that bears no fruit’ (verse 2) and ‘prunes the branches that do bear fruit’ (verse 2). The key to fruitfulness is remaining in ongoing connection with the vine – ‘remain in the vine’ (verse 4). Jesus is the vine and those who are incorporated into the vine as branches are fruitful only because of their connection to Jesus. If we strive to do things ourselves, then we will fail. If we stay vitally connected to Jesus, then we will grow and bear much fruit.
Remaining in Jesus is the major theme of this parable. It is the key to Christian growth and fruitfulness. Jesus warns us that those who don’t remain in him will be like the dead branches, that are cut off, gathered up and burned (verse 6). If we remain in Jesus and seek to live in obedience to his words, then we will pray in accordance with his will and we can be assured that God will faithfully answer those prayers (verse 7). Obedience to Christ’s word and faithfulness in prayer are the two keys to remaining in Christ.
When we are fruitful – as a result of our connection to the vine – it gives glory to God the Father, and it is an encouragement that we are truly Christ’s disciples (verse 8).
Prayer:
Give thanks that you are a branch of the true vine and that you get to bear the fruit that flows out of your relationship with Jesus. Pray for God’s help to remain in him, vitally and daily connected to him by prayer, reading his word and seeking to be obedient to Jesus’ words.
