Reflection: Further reading: John 14:10-14
Thomas stands out in John’s Gospel as the ‘honest doubter’. Thomas’ question reveals that he is confused and perplexed – what does Jesus mean by ‘the Father’s house’ and how would they get there? At least Thomas was being honest! His questions lead Jesus to make one of his most memorable and most loved of statements about himself.
It has been said that “Jesus’ solution to perplexity is not a recipe; it is a relationship with him”*. Jesus said, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me’ (verse 6). Jesus is the way to God and the only way to the Father. He reveals the truth of God and the life of God. It is through Jesus that God makes himself known. ‘No-one has ever seen God, but God the only Son, who is at the Father’s side, had made him known’ (John 1:18).
Jesus speaks God’s word and reveals God to us. Jesus came as a light to shine into people’s lives and show them the truth about their own lives and how to find the way to God. Jesus is also ‘the life’. He has life in himself, and is the resurrection and the life (John 11:25).
Jesus’ answer to Thomas is focused on himself. He is the way, he is the truth, he is the life. Jesus isn’t one path amidst a range of possible paths, he is the path to relationship with God.
Jesus is the way to God because he reveals the truth of God and is the source of life in God.
Prayer:
Give thanks, to God the Father, that Jesus is the way, the truth and the life for you. Pray for God’s grace to do the works he has prepared for you to do.
