Series Introduction:
For the next 14 days, we are going to put ourselves in the place of the first disciples as we listen to key passages from Jesus’ farewell address to his disciples in John 13-16. In these chapters, Jesus seeks to help his disciples, and prepare them for when he is no longer with them physically. In these rich and important passages, there are many wonderful insights into what it means for each of us to live for Jesus today.
Reflection:
The setting of these verses is just before the Passover Feast; but more importantly for Jesus, it was just before the time of his trial, death and exaltation. He sets out to reassure his disciples by demonstrating his love for them.
In doing so – given Jesus’ status – he does the unthinkable. He strips down to his loin cloth, he takes up a towel, pours water into a basin and begins to wash and dry his disciples’ feet. In one sense, this was an outworking of Jewish cleansing rituals when people gathered for a meal. However, it was normally the servants and not the host who did the washing!
I wonder how you would feel if your church/organisational leader suddenly lowered themselves to serve you by washing your feet? If you are the leader – have you ever done anything like this with your people?
This most memorable of scenes is a striking reminder that our faith is in a God who serves us through his Son. That service is tangible and real. It is deeply personal and particular. It is meeting your most important need.
Prayer:
Give thanks for Jesus’ service of you. Pray for Jesus’ grace to follow his example.
