Reflection:
“Do you understand what I have done for you? … I have set you an example” (verse 12, 15).
Jesus is our Lord and Teacher, and he has modelled how he wants us to live. Both in this act, and especially in his act of self-giving sacrifice on the cross, he models how we should act toward each other.
Jesus our master serves us, and so we should serve each other. He humbled himself to wash his disciples’ feet, and he expects us to do the same. ‘Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him’ (verse 16). The Christian life is one modelled on Jesus – putting others before ourselves, being other-person centred, making sacrifices for the sake of others.
Our salvation and relationship with God are totally dependent upon Jesus’ costly action of service on our behalf. If he who is far greater can act like this, then surely, we must live in the same way. Jesus’ promise is that if we live in this way, ‘we will be blessed’ (verse 17).
As leaders and members of churches and Christian organisations, how are you serving others? How are you looking to Jesus to be your model and guide? How are you humbling yourself for someone else’s sake?
Prayer:
Give thanks for Jesus’ clear and amazing example. Pray for grace and help to serve as Jesus served you.
