Reflection: So much more than stardust!
Genesis 2 is the second creation account in the Bible (remember, there are over 20), this time focussing on the creation of the man and the woman. Chapter 1 told of God making humans in his own image: thinking, conscious beings with moral responsibility and creative powers. So different to the rest of creation! And yet, (in ch. 2) we are made of the dust of the ground. Did you know that every atom in your body was made in a star? We are stardust! And, if we could break a human body into all of its chemical elements, it would be worth just a few dollars.
And yet … While our bodies are only made of stardust, we are so much more. This is a puzzle for anyone who thinks that science will one day give us the answers to every question. Why? Because, while science can tell us the chemistry of a human being, it can never tell us about the purpose of life or our relationship with the Creator.
Praise God that he has revealed to us the things that no amount of human wisdom could uncover!
Prayer: (using the words of Psalm 8)
Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!
When we consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is humankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them? You have made them a little lower than the angels and crowned them with glory and honour. You made them rulers over the works of your hands; you put everything under their feet: all flocks and herds, and the animals of the wild, the birds in the sky, and the fish in the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas.
Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!
