Reflection: Home at last
Forgive me for finishing this series with a longer reading and personal note; may it lead you to hold on to the Christian hope of a time when all will be well.
At 23 years old, our oldest child, Ben, died suddenly of cancer. Revelation 21:4 is our family’s theme verse as we remember him: “there will be no more tears or death.” When he was asked about dying, Ben said, “I will be ok, but it will be crap for everyone else.” (Yes, truly it was, and it is.)
Soon after, Ben’s nine-year-old brother asked an anxious question: “Mum, if Ben can die then anyone can die can’t they?” Such is the fragility of earthly life. However, as Christians, this world is just the beginning, and we hold tightly to the hope of a glorious future.
There is nothing like the unexpected death of a loved one to make us think about the important things in life. The lesson: work out your priorities; let’s not waste our efforts in trivial things.
What is life really about? Loving God and loving your neighbour … as we live in hope of the new creation.
Prayer: Lord God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, embrace us in our pains and our joys, as we face our lives on this earth that are often not easy. Help us to hold on to you. Help us to always live in the light of your redeeming love: love that will one day make all things new. Forever and ever. Amen!
