Reflection: Comfort for God’s people
Further reading: Isaiah 40:1-20,24-31
Isaiah 40 is wonderful! Do read the whole chapter. It starts with those words made so famous by Handel’s Messiah, “Comfort, comfort my people.” God will save his people!
Despite the trials they go through, despite the fact that people are fickle like grass in the wind, there is good news! God is both the mighty creator-ruler and the tender shepherd: “He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart.” (vs. 11)
Prayer: Lord God, forgive the fickle unfaithfulness of your people. Forgive my unfaithfulness. And, when I am far from you, be near to me like the shepherd holding the lamb, like the father embracing his prodigal child. Call me home to you and help me embrace a life of faithfulness to you.
