Reflection:
You are at 1,000 feet, and you need to land your aircraft. There are a host of variables demanding your attention: wind strength, wind direction, carburettor icing, height, heading, radio calls, other aircraft, and fuel management. But here’s the thing: You can’t allow any of these things to become all-consuming. Only the final outcome is allowed to consume me, and it is this: Where am I going to land? Everything I do at any moment is directed towards that goal.
And so it is with God. Everything I try and do now is directed towards realizing the end point God has given me – landing safely back home. Why? Because, along with all of God’s people, I am what the Old Testament prophet Zechariah calls delightfully, a ‘prisoner of hope’ (Zechariah 9:12). And so I seek to be like the apostle Paul who forgets what is behind and pushes on towards the goal.
Prayer:Â Dear Lord Jesus, Please teach me to view this life from the perspective of my true home, so that I will always be heading towards it. For that is where my heart is.
