Reflection:
Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. (1 Corinthians 12:27)
I’ve discovered a secret. Here it is: I am only “me” in relation to others. It is others who give me definition. Without others, I cannot love. Without others, I cannot share, be enriched, or have a place. And by myself, I only have the strength of one.
I am continually humbled by the qualities of those the world too often overlooks; the love of the Down’s syndrome child; the humour of a friend with cerebral palsy, the zeal of a faithful colleague. And so I treasure those God has given me who walk beside me. They are anything but ordinary. They enable me to understand God and myself a little better.
So, see the sacredness of others. Everyone is special. All carry the image of God – if they haven’t allowed this greatness to be disfigured by evil or diminished by ego.
God’s purposes are fulfilled in relationships, which explains why belonging is beautiful.
And to live together in a loving community is to prefigure the kingdom of God.
Prayer: Dear Lord God, I love the way you choose the least, the last, and the littlest to represent you. They carry your grace, your servant heart, and your glory. And it is beautiful to see.
