Reflection: Should a professing Christian fear God’s judgment? Yesterday we tackled that question by reference to 1 John 4:17-18 and other New Testament passages. If anyone remains in doubt, consider this highly relevant teaching of none other than Jesus Christ himself. Could he have been any blunter? It is to be stressed that in this passage Jesus was addressing the Disciples – not hypocritical Pharisees or unrepentant sinners. We should all fear Jesus’ judgment more than any conceivable worldly misfortune, even physical death itself.
Questions: What do you fear the most? Death? Illness? Bankruptcy? Divorce? Loss of prestige? Have you taken to heart Jesus’ warning in this Gospel passage?
Prayer: Father help me to be courageous as I live my life as a follower of your Son, Jesus. Help me to appreciate that my principal duty in life is to prepare myself for Jesus’ judgment, so that I may face him with maximum confidence. Amen
