Reflection: Take on a Spiritual Mind
Do you find the verse for today a little hard to understand?
What is Jesus trying to say here to his disciples?
At first glance, I found it a little difficult to grasp this verse. I later discovered that Jesus was talking symbolically about eating his flesh and drinking his blood, in the context of John chapter 6 (Bread of Heaven), which the people found difficult to follow. Many stopped following Jesus after this episode, except for Peter and the disciples.
In essence, Jesus was speaking in spiritual terms, not in human terms. Bread and his flesh were used as symbols, as was his custom. Hence one needs to have a spiritual mind to understand the hard teaching of Jesus. The Jewish ancestors were fed by manna in the wilderness and died, whereas Jesus here offers himself as the bread (manna) from heaven who will give life eternal.
In retrospect, we Christians need to continually remind ourselves about the importance of acknowledging the Spirit of God in our daily lives. God’s Word and his Spirit are inseparable. They are so powerful and can break through any barrier whether physical or spiritual, seen or unseen. The very words of Jesus we read from the Bible are life, for Jesus and his words are also inseparable (John 14:6 and John 1:1). Be encouraged today as you approach God’s Word and come with an expectant heart, believing God will do something different in your life today as you place your trust in his Words, which are spirit and are life.
Prayer
Lord, help me of my unbelief and misunderstanding of the things of God at times in my life. Guide me today to deeply understand the spiritual things of God and the power of the Word of God as from this day forward — that the Word of God is never a human word but ‘spirit’, and is never dead nor dormant, but ‘alive and active.’ Amen!
