Reflection: Commit God’s Word to Memory
One of the first Bible verses I memorized in my village Sunday School program was Psalm 119.105, in my mother tongue, Fijian. I later heard this Scripture being sung by Amy Grant and also committed the English version to memory through singing the song. Indeed, God’s Word continues to lighten up the dark areas of my life and is like a torch guiding me home in the night.
Memorising and singing the verse of today reminds me of the many other wonderful insights into God’s Word in this beautiful and long Psalm 119. Its acrostic nature in the Hebrew language structure would surely help the Jews memorise or sing parts or the whole Psalm which speaks of the Word of God as his commandments, precepts, law, statutes, testimonies and words. For example, verse 9 says that a young man can keep his way pure by taking heed according to God’s Word. The Psalmist affirms the art of memorisation by saying in verse 11, “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.”
Hiding God’s Word of truth in one’s heart is a good challenge for Christians during this season. Every word of truth we commit to memory will be quickened by the Holy Spirit to aid us again in times of need — in that it becomes a lamp to our feet and a light to our path once again. As you spend more time reading and reflecting on God’s Word, ensure that you commit to memory at least a verse or two which is a good Christian discipline.
Prayer
Dear Lord, please tune my mind to be able to commit to memory certain Scripture verses you prompt in me this season. Help me understand that these words of truth shall be quickened by your Holy Spirit to assist me again in times of trouble or need one day — to be a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. Amen!
