Reflection: Thursday Night: Passover
I often forget the backdrop to Jesus’ last week is Passover, a remembrance-meal of deliverance, emancipation and freedom from slavery in Egypt.
God showed his love for the people of Israel by delivering them out from the hands of their enemies. Now God shows his love for us by being delivered into the hands of his enemies and sold for silver.
The Passover recalls victory over the Egyptians by God’s ‘outstretched arm.’ The ‘Jesus way’ reclaims victory over death, sin and even the Enemy himself, by Jesus’ outstretched hands.
I’m relieved the disciples seem oblivious to the weightiness of what Jesus is saying and doing in the moment. Sometimes, just like them, I think I live that way too.
Communion:
Come join the meal that makes us one.
Come eat the bread, body of the Son.
Come drink the cup, sealed by blood, victory won.
Let’s eat and drink together and remember.
Prayer: Jesus, thank you for your victorious freedom. Amen.
