Reflection: Temple Tuesdays
Jesus clearly hasn’t read Dale Carnegie’s social manual: How to win friends and Influence people.
Jesus breaks most of Dale’s rules today at the Temple: he condemns and criticises the influencers (11:27-12:12), gets into arguments (vs 13), creates lose-lose situations (vs 17), tells people they’re wrong (vs 27), and humiliates his opponents (vs 40).
Mark’s Gospel is said to be a different kind of manual on authentic discipleship.
I won’t project on you, but Jesus’ actions today made me reflect: am I really serious about the ‘Jesus way’? The reality that it will likely: put me at odds with power; force me to challenge injustice and moral/religious hypocrisy and bind me to actually loving God and others no matter what… or am I more interested in being popular, and doing the Jesus stuff when it’s convenient for me?
Prayer: Dear Jesus, I find myself understanding and identifying more and more with the motivations of the religious crew you aren’t happy with. Help me to be serious about living your way. Amen.
