Reflection: Monday Morning: Fruitless Fig Tree
That poor fig tree. It wasn’t even fig season! Costa from Gardening Australia needs to have a word with Jesus. Leaves come in spring; figs come late summer.
I’m deeply challenged by what Jesus is actually saying. The fig tree represents Israel. It’s a prophetic object lesson, a judgment against Israel’s unfruitfulness and a picture of what’s about to come. We don’t like the word ‘curse’ but that’s what it is (vs21)!
Taken together with what Jesus does next in the temple, it’s an indictment on Israel’s whole way of being ‘Israel’.
I’m really uneasy about the implications of this for us. Surely Jesus would never curse us to wither and die for our unfruitfulness?
Prayer: Jesus, can you go back to just being meek and mild, feeding hungry fisherman and healing people? I like that version of you better; much safer and easier to fit into my life.
