Reflection: Most of us have experienced one of those days where everything is going really well … until it’s not. A few years ago, I was having a lovely morning … until I stepped out to cross the street and – BAM – I was hit by a car. It could have been much worse, but my day changed dramatically in that moment, and I ended up in hospital. Reading today’s passage feels a bit like this. Until now we’ve seen that we are wonderfully made in God’s image, and treasured by him. But today, we’re hit with the sobering reality of sin. We all
know that we haven’t lived up to the image we’ve been created in. If we’re honest with ourselves, we don’t do a great job of representing God in the world. The Bible goes as far to say that our sin has made us “worthless”. This doesn’t mean that God has stopped valuing us – but that this value isn’t based on our actions. This is a truth that should humble us, and make the fact that God does treasure us infinitely more precious.
Question: Do you ever think your value to God comes from your good deeds? How do today’s verses lead you away from pride and towards humility?
Prayer: Lord, I come before you recognising all the ways that I’ve failed to live as your representative on this earth. Please forgive me. Thank you that you value me unconditionally, and that your love for me isn’t based on my actions. Amen.
