Reflection: Fancy going on a road trip with God? Here, God invites Abram to go on a journey into the unknown—for Abram, anyway. Abram is to leave behind all that he knows, and all his worldly security: his country, his people, and his father’s household. The earthly stakes are high, but so are the promises, the land, and the infinite future that God has prepared for Abram. Moreover, Abram will not journey alone, because God binds himself to him and becomes Abram’s new security and inheritance. God even gives Abram a new name as part of that new future: ‘Abraham’, meaning ‘father of many nations’ (Genesis 14:3-8). Today, we are part of the “all peoples on earth” to be blessed by God through Abraham. We are probably an unexpected inheritance. But walking with God is often surprising that way.
Prayer: Father, may we hold on to your promises that you will bless all people through Abraham. Grow the number of those across all nations who will know and love you. Help us remember that you are a faithful God and that you are with us wherever we go. Amen.
