Reflection: We’ve talked of walking; here is talk of running. These stirring verses follow the writer to the Hebrews’ celebration of the heroes of the faith, the ones who looked forward to the city whose builder and architect was God (Hebrews 11:10). These heroes of faith were so convicted of their ultimate, eternal hopes that they were able to put their earthly lives—including their suffering—into proper context. These are the witnesses (Hebrews 12:1) who’ve gone before us and in whose steps we must follow.
We are to walk—that is, live—in all the ways we’ve already enumerated: We are to walk in newness of life (Romans 6:4), in trust that God will direct our paths (Proverbs 3:5-6), and in confidence that God accompanies us on every dark road (Psalm 23:4). All of this can help us run with perseverance as we keep our eyes fixed on Jesus. Who can you encourage today to keep on running?
Prayer: Gracious God, there is so much sin that can easily entangle and distract us but please clarify our focus on you and your kingdom. Enlarge for us the beauty and majesty of Jesus: his abiding love, his perfect sacrifice, his triumph over death—and may that help us run towards you all the days of this life. Amen.
