Reflection: God walked in the garden in the cool of the day. This tiny and yet tantalising detail is tucked away amidst these tragic verses showing the fear and shame the first man and woman felt at disobeying God. So they tried to hide from him… but as if they could! They couldn’t be more intimately known by God. He had breathed the breath of life into the man, given him creative and fulfilling life work, and the perfect partner to accomplish all of it. The intended next step of humankind was deep communion with God: to walk with him always in paradise. There’s something open-ended and thrilling about this idea: beloved creatures in infinite relationship with their Creator, destined to discover so much about him, and with him, as they all make their way together. Sin has, presently, spoiled those plans. But the Bible tells of the long and winding path that God goes on to get us back on track.
Prayer: Our Father, you wanted us to walk with you always, but so often we’re like the man and the woman who want to hide from you instead. Thank you for your great love in sending Jesus to find us and bring us back to you, Amen.
