Reflection: The NIV says that Jesus’ death and resurrection enables us to “live a new life” while other translations say that his sacrifice enables us to “walk in newness of life”. ‘Live’ and ‘walk’ are indelibly linked: in the biblical world, walking was how you got from one place to another. It would not be a conceptual leap for life to be regarded in a similar fashion, and for the good and not-so-good choices you make to set you on particular paths—all with their corresponding destinations. In this way, walking imbues an ordinary, everyday activity with cosmic significance.
Whatever the case, Romans reminds us that salvation required humanity to be set on a completely different path to the one it was on. A spiritual dead-end awaits those “in Adam” (Romans 5:12-14), while those “in Christ” (Romans 5:17-19) are on the road to eternal life with God.
Prayer: Gracious God, I pray that everyday, I would be mindful that your sacrifice allows me to walk in newness of life, and on a path that leads to you and your eternal kingdom. Please comfort and strengthen me on this journey, and help me orient all my days to you. Amen.
