Reflection: What an electrifying description: Jesus’ disciples say their hearts burned within them as the man they didn’t recognise as Jesus walked and talked with them. The disciples had been on the road to Emmaus, a village near Jerusalem, commiserating about recent events. They had thought Jesus would “redeem Israel” (Luke 24:21) but he had died an unspeakably cruel death. Hope was lost.
But there’s something about this guy who’s talking to them, and bringing the story of Israel to life in a way that, it turns out, only he can. At this point, they don’t know that he is Jesus, resurrected. But in their heart of hearts, it’s like they do.
Day 1 of this series suggested that God walking with humans was God’s plan from the beginning of time. These men may not fully realise that new creation has dawned but their burning hearts sense, already, that God is in their midst.
Prayer: Gracious Father, thank you for coming to meet us in all wherever we are—even on the side of the road. You come alongside us in humility to encourage us and lift our hopes in you. We praise you for your love and faithfulness. Amen.
