Reflection
With warnings ringing in our ears, we’re prepared to hear the second half of this sermon. It’s now as if the preacher steps down from his soap box and invites his listeners on a tour of the tabernacle. This might hammer home some truths that have become all too familiar.
“Ahhh, over here, see the names of high priest celebrities. Yes, all from the line of Aaron. And this, the outer court with all its various arrangements for cleansing and worship. Sorry, can’t help but get bloody in this endless mess…but we know that without everything being purified with blood, nothing is forgiven. And up there behind the curtain, the precious symbols of the Divine Presence… But dear friends,” the preacher turns in earnest appeal, “Can’t you see how pathetic this temporary system of try-hard worship is? No priest is holy enough to represent us to a holy God. No sacrifice is powerful enough to remove sin. Nor were we made to cringe in shame from a shrouded God.”
Prayer
It’s a place I haven’t walked before, this bloody mess of a tabernacle courtyard. Unpleasant. And yes, pathetic. But if I’m honest, these bloody shoes have tried other ways to make a go of life without drawing near to you, heavenly Father, through the blood of Jesus. Staggering, that Christ’s one-time sacrifice has made me clean and holy in your company. Thank you, holy and righteous Father. Thank you.
