Reflection
I had a relentless soccer/hockey coach in high school. His passion was Premier League English soccer, and we were his wanna-be league-worthy team. His fierce catch phrase from the sidelines was (with a strong Scottish accent), “Geeet a grrriiip!”
For the first half of this preacher’s sermon there’s definitely an undercurrent of the same message. About a dozen times he says things like: Pay attention! Hold on! Don’t be hard-hearted. Make the most of today. Be afraid! Make every effort. Don’t get careless. Grow up!! With our coach, we knew what he was on about. He’d taught and trained us. We just had to act on all that training. Same with this crowd. They were steeped in Jewish scriptures, generations of it. What’s more, they’d embraced Jesus as their Messiah. Now they just had to live it, literally, for all they’re worth.
Prayer
Father, give me a better grip on your profound love and our profound creed. And in the overflow of that may I live and love passionately today. With your responsive help may I make every obedient effort to share in your forever-rest.
