Reflection
I’m not an athlete but I have a brother who used to run ultra-marathons (120-160 kilometres). Oh, he practiced, he had good shoes, ate well, hydrated well, had a good crew…but I reckon he was mentally designed for this. He’s very determined, conscientious, focussed and competitive. The race was in his head as much as his body.
We saints are running an ultra-marathon. The preacher-coach is doing everything he can to mentally prepare and train us for the long haul. Pure and holy, we’ve begun the race. Sure, we get feeble and discouraged and the path gets rough. But we’re determined. We’re heading for what’s promised to be a better place: rest (4:9-11). I love the picture painted here: sidelines crowded with cheering saints (some you recognize!) and our focus on Jesus, not just because he’s at the finish line, but because he showed us how to run.
Prayer
As I run the race of life, help me to fix my eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of my faith. When I am strong, let me encourage others on the way. When I am weak, keep me from the allure of just giving up. Renew my strength, determination and hope.
